Power Surge, Grid-Return & Lightning
Component-level diagnostics to help establish whether failure points to a lightning event, an induced or grid-return surge, phase or neutral problems, or something else entirely.
Technical Damage Reports · Surge & Lightning · IT & Solar
Independent damage reports and root-cause findings for laptops, servers, networks, CCTV, solar inverters and batteries. Based in Margate on the KZN South Coast, we support policyholders, brokers, loss adjusters and insurers across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the rest of South Africa.
A technical insurance assessment is an independent inspection of damaged equipment. It records what is damaged, tests why it failed (for example lightning, a grid-return surge, liquid, impact or ordinary wear and tear) and shows whether each item can be repaired economically or needs replacing, supported by current replacement pricing.
After a storm, a power return or an accident, insurers and loss adjusters rarely settle on a vague one-line quote. They look for serial-verified proof, an explanation of how the equipment failed, a clear line between sudden damage and gradual deterioration, and accurate like-for-like replacement specifications.
Highveld summer thunderstorms and load-shedding power returns are well-known causes of equipment failure in South Africa. Because we also work every day on IT support, networks and solar and backup power, our assessors test equipment with real diagnostic instruments rather than guessing from a photo.
We provide technical findings only. The insurer assesses cover and decides the claim, and legal questions should go to your attorney or broker.
From a single surge-damaged laptop or home inverter to a multi-server rack, fibre network or three-phase hybrid solar plant.
Component-level diagnostics to help establish whether failure points to a lightning event, an induced or grid-return surge, phase or neutral problems, or something else entirely.
Testing of motherboards, power supplies, storage, displays, liquid ingress and impact damage, with repair-versus-replace costings.
Assessment of servers, RAID controllers, storage arrays and virtualisation hosts, including whether data can be salvaged.
Evaluation of hybrid and off-grid inverters, MPPT charge controllers, lithium battery BMS faults and UPS units after surge or overload events.
Testing of PoE switches, routers, firewalls, wireless links, fibre ONTs and PABX systems damaged by transients over copper, coax or power lines.
Inspection of cameras, recorders, biometric readers, electric fence energisers, gate motors and intercoms to separate surge damage from age-related failure.
Assessment of point-of-sale terminals, printers, scanners, scales, medical-practice equipment and industrial controllers.
Site checks of earthing, surge protection, UPS sizing and server or solar rooms before cover is arranged, to reduce the chance of future claims.
Whether you are a homeowner preparing a claim, a business after a surge event or an adjuster instructing a technical specialist.
Clear damage reports for homeowners, tenants and remote workers preparing a household or all-risk claim.
Structured assessments for offices, shops, practices and venues after an incident.
Detailed investigations for factories, estates, farms and large commercial claims.
Technical specialist support for short-term insurers, underwriting managers, brokers and loss adjusters.
| Model | Best for | How it works | Fee structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bench assessment (drop-off or courier) | Single laptops, PCs, routers, UPS units or inverters | The item is booked into our Margate workshop or couriered in, tested, photographed and reported on. | Fixed fee per item, quoted upfront |
| On-site inspection | Servers, fixed solar plants, CCTV, cabling or multi-item claims | An assessor visits your premises with diagnostic instruments to inspect installed systems in place. | Call-out plus assessment fee, quoted upfront |
| Remote file review | Broker pre-checks, quote validation and out-of-area claims | We review technician notes, logs, photos, serial plates and supplier quotes to comment on cause and pricing. | Per file or hourly review |
| Insurer or broker arrangement | Brokers, loss adjusters and underwriting managers | A dedicated instruction channel with standard report templates and agreed turnaround targets. | Agreed tariff per instruction |
Assessments are carried out by working IT, network and solar technicians who diagnose faults at component level.
Reports include serial numbers, photographs, fault findings, likely cause, repair-or-replace reasoning and current replacement pricing.
We report what the evidence shows, including when damage looks like gradual wear, corrosion or poor installation rather than a sudden event.
Practical experience with hybrid inverters, MPPT controllers, lithium batteries, UPS units and surge protection.
Where a repair or data recovery is economical and approved, we can carry it out ourselves.
Workshop and on-site presence from Margate across KwaZulu-Natal, plus Gauteng and the rest of South Africa through courier, remote review and scheduled visits.
The policyholder, broker or adjuster sends the claim reference, incident date and item list, and books a site visit or bench drop-off.
We verify make, model and serial numbers, photograph the external and internal condition, and test power rails, boards, storage and surge paths.
We assess whether the evidence points to lightning, a grid surge, liquid, impact, electrical overload or ordinary wear and tear.
We check parts availability and costs against current like-for-like replacement pricing to show whether each item is repairable.
You receive a signed PDF with photographs, findings and itemised repair or replacement quotes to submit to the insurer.
Keep the evidence. Burnt power bricks and damaged cables often show exactly where the surge entered.
A report is only useful if it names the right cause and the right equipment. These are the categories we work with most often.
Examples of brands we regularly assess include Victron Energy, Sunsynk, Deye, Growatt, Hikvision, Dahua, MikroTik, Ubiquiti, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Brand names are trademarks of their owners and are used only to describe the equipment we work on. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any manufacturer or insurer.
Our workshop and head office are in Margate on the Lower South Coast, so bench assessments and on-site visits are closest for South Coast clients. We also travel to Durban, Umhlanga, Ballito, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay and the rest of the province. Travel for remote sites is quoted upfront.
Gauteng’s Highveld has frequent summer thunderstorms, so surge and lightning claims are common. We support policyholders, brokers and adjusters in Johannesburg, Sandton, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria, the East and West Rand and the Vaal Triangle through scheduled on-site visits, couriered bench assessments and remote file reviews.
Beyond KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng we help brokers, insurers and commercial policyholders in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and Northern Cape through couriered bench diagnostics, remote file reviews and scheduled visits for larger claims.
It is a written report by a technician that records the make, model and serial number of damaged equipment, what has failed internally, the likely cause of the damage (such as a power surge, lightning, liquid or impact) and whether the item can be economically repaired or should be replaced, with current market pricing.
Insurers decide what they accept. Our reports are written to include the information claims handlers and loss adjusters normally ask for: serial numbers, photographs, fault findings, likely cause, repair or replace reasoning and replacement quotes. If your insurer has specific requirements or a preferred assessor, tell us at the start and check with your broker.
We inspect power supplies, surge components, circuit tracks, network transformers and integrated circuits. Surge damage and age-related failure usually leave different signs, but not every case is clear. Where the evidence is uncertain, the report says so rather than guessing.
Yes. We assess hybrid and off-grid inverters, MPPT charge controllers, lithium battery packs and BMS boards, and UPS units, and we check whether surge protection and earthing were present. See our solar and backup power services.
Bench assessments are typically completed within 24 to 48 business hours. On-site inspections are typically reported within 24 to 72 hours of the visit, depending on the number of items and how quickly supplier pricing arrives. We confirm the timeline when you instruct us.
The party who instructs us pays our fee. Some policies contribute to reasonable assessment costs and some do not, so check your policy wording or ask your broker before you instruct us. Insurers, brokers and adjusters can be billed per instruction.
An item is described as BER when it cannot be repaired reliably, when parts are unavailable, or when repair would cost too much compared with replacing it. The exact threshold is set by the insurer or the policy terms, so we show the repair and replacement costs and let the insurer apply its own rules.
Yes. Our workshop and head office are in Margate on the KZN South Coast, with on-site coverage from Port Edward and Port Shepstone through Durban, Ballito, Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands to Richards Bay and Zululand. Remote areas may carry a travel charge, quoted upfront.
Yes. We cover Johannesburg, Sandton, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria, the East and West Rand and the Vaal through scheduled on-site visits, couriered bench assessments and remote file reviews for brokers and adjusters.
We test storage separately from the mainboard. If the drives survived, we can recover your data to replacement hardware under strict confidentiality and POPIA-aware safeguards, with your permission.
Yes, if you ask us to, and we will be open about that. Our fee for the assessment does not depend on who supplies the replacement. If your insurer prefers a strict separation between assessor and supplier, we can assess only.
No. We provide technical findings only. The insurer assesses cover and decides the claim, and legal questions should go to your attorney or broker.
